Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide is a selective postemergence herbicide containing 1.70% fluazifop-P-butyl for control of annual and perennial grassy weeds in ornamental landscapes, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, lawns, parks, golf courses, and other labeled aesthetic-use sites. Ornamec 170 targets grasses without controlling broadleaf weeds or sedges, making it especially useful for removing unwanted grassy weeds from established ornamental beds and selected turf situations.
As a systemic grass herbicide, Ornamec 170 is absorbed through treated foliage and moves into shoots, roots, rhizomes, stolons, and growing points. Growth of susceptible grasses stops soon after application, followed by loss of vigor, yellowing or reddening, and eventual plant death. In turf, Ornamec 170 is specifically labeled for suppression and control of common and hybrid bermudagrass in established tall fescue and zoysiagrass.
Ornamec 170 is labeled for ornamental gardens, parks, golf courses, lawns, grounds, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and other plants grown for aesthetic purposes. It may be applied over the top of ornamentals listed in Table 1 of the label, while directed sprays are recommended for more sensitive species listed in Tables 2 through 4. Ornamec 170 is not labeled for plants being grown for sale, commercial seed production, or research purposes.
Target Weeds
Ornamec 170 controls labeled annual grasses including large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass, barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, fall panicum, field sandbur, giant foxtail, green foxtail, yellow foxtail, goosegrass, seedling guineagrass, seedling johnsongrass, junglerice, prairie cupgrass, red rice, southern sandbur, Texas panicum, volunteer barley, volunteer oats, volunteer rye, volunteer corn, volunteer wheat, wild oats, witchgrass, and other labeled grasses. Perennial grass targets include bermudagrass, guineagrass, quackgrass, rhizome johnsongrass, torpedograss, and wirestem muhly.
Application Notes
For annual grasses in ornamental areas, apply 6 to 9 fl oz of Ornamec 170 per 1,000 sq ft. For perennial grasses, apply 9 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft per application; three applications may be required. Apply to actively growing grasses before they tiller, form seedheads, or exceed the growth stages listed on the label. Repeat treatments may be needed for full-season perennial grass control.
For bermudagrass suppression and control in established tall fescue, apply 2.0 fl oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft as a spot treatment. Begin in early spring as bermudagrass starts growth, avoid July and August applications, and resume treatments at 30-day intervals from late summer into fall. Complete control may require 1 to 2 growing seasons.
For established zoysiagrass, apply 1.3 fl oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft as a spot treatment beginning in late spring, around June 1, and repeat at 30-day intervals through summer into fall. Complete bermudagrass control may also require 1 to 2 growing seasons. Do not apply to any turfgrass species other than tall fescue or zoysiagrass. Do not apply if rainfall is expected within 1 hour.
